Protect What You've Worked Hard For
Protect What You Value
Protect What Matters Most
MWGUNSAFES by Mike Ward’s Liberty Safes
The premier safe and vault dealer in the South.
Not all safes are created equal — and the difference between a real safe and a glorified steel cabinet often comes down to details most buyers never think to ask about. At MWGUNSAFES, Baton Rouge's premier destination for safes and vaults, we've helped South Louisiana families and businesses choose the right safe for over 40 years. Here's what actually matters before you buy.
1. Steel Gauge & Body Construction
Steel gauge tells you how thick the safe's body is — and it's counterintuitive: the lower the gauge number, the thicker (and stronger) the steel.
| Gauge | Thickness (approx.) | Relative Strength |
|---|---|---|
| 14 ga | 0.075" | Lightest / entry-level |
| 12 ga | 0.105" | Moderate |
| 11 ga | 0.120" | Better |
| 10 ga | 0.135" | Strong |
| 7 ga | 0.180" | Heaviest / commercial-grade |
Always ask what gauge steel is used in the body, not just the door — many budget safes use a thick door plate to impress buyers while the body is thin sheet metal. Our team walks Baton Rouge customers through steel specs on every safe on our showroom floor, side by side, so you can see and feel the difference.
2. How the Safe Is Built
Construction method matters as much as thickness:
- Tack-welded vs. continuously welded seams — Fewer, stronger welds mean fewer weak points for prying or forced entry.
- Rolled/formed body vs. seamed body — A body formed from fewer pieces of steel has fewer seams, which means fewer vulnerabilities.
- Number of seams — Ask how many seams the body has. More seams generally means more potential entry points.
3. Where the Steel Comes From
Not all steel is equal. Ask whether the safe is made with U.S. steel or imported steel, and where it's manufactured. Steel quality, consistency, and sourcing directly affect how the safe performs under attack — this is a fair question to ask any dealer, and reputable brands will have a clear answer. Every brand we carry at our Baton Rouge showroom — Liberty, Browning, Fort Knox, American Security, and Champion — can answer it with confidence.
4. Size & Real-World Capacity
Advertised "gun capacity" numbers are often optimistic. A safe listed as a 30-gun safe may realistically hold 15 — or even 10 — depending on what you're storing.
Keep in mind:
- Scoped rifles, bolt-actions, and ARs/AKs with certain stock configurations can take up 2 to 4 slots each, not one.
- Rack configuration and accessories (door organizers, shelving) can increase usable capacity.
- Always think in terms of your actual collection, not the manufacturer's rated number.
Stop by our Airline Highway showroom and we'll help you map out exactly how many long guns, handguns, and valuables your safe will realistically hold.
5. Locking Mechanisms
Electronic keypad locks:
- Typically a 6-digit combination that you can change yourself.
- Run on a 9-volt battery — S&G and SecuRam locks are built around the Duracell 9V standard. Using the wrong battery can damage the keypad.
- Check the battery's expiration date before installing — if it expires within the current year, it's already too old.
- Swap the battery a couple of times a year, especially given South Louisiana's humidity.
Mechanical dial locks:
- No batteries, no electronics — a traditional, proven option.
(Want the full breakdown of every lock type we offer, including biometric and redundant locks? Check out our [Locking Mechanisms Guide].)
6. Fire Ratings — Ask for Proof
Anyone can print "fireproof" on a box. What matters is whether the rating comes from independent, third-party testing — not a marketing claim on a listing from an online marketplace or a discount import you'll find outside a real Baton Rouge dealer.
Established manufacturers publish real, tested fire ratings:
| Brand | Tested Fire Rating |
|---|---|
| Browning | 1200°F and 1550°F (tested at both) |
| Liberty | 1200°F |
| Fort Knox | 1200°F |
| American Security (AMSEC) | 1200°F |
Brands like Liberty, Browning, Fort Knox, American Security, and Champion have decades of testing and manufacturing history behind them. If a safe is priced well below these brands, ask why — the fire rating, steel gauge, and construction are usually where the cost was cut. MWGUNSAFES carries all of these trusted, American-tested brands in-store.
7. Anchoring: Should You Bolt It Down?
Where the safe lives changes the answer:
- Garage, workshop, office, or commercial space: Bolt it down. These locations are more exposed to theft attempts, and an unbolted safe can simply be tipped or carried out.
- Inside the home: Often a matter of preference, depending on the safe's weight and what's stored inside — but still worth considering for higher-value contents.
8. Intended Use
Think through how you'll actually use the safe before you buy:
- Rifles, handguns, or both?
- Do you want modular interior configurations as your collection grows?
- Is this for storage only, or do you need quick access?
9. Climate Considerations: Don't Skip the Dehumidifier
Especially here in South Louisiana, humidity is a real threat to what's inside your safe. A dehumidifier (rod or desiccant-based) helps prevent rust and pitting on firearms and valuables. This applies to both gun safes and most home safes — condensation builds up inside a sealed steel box faster than people expect in our climate.
Why Baton Rouge Trusts MWGUNSAFES
Steel gauge, construction, steel sourcing, true capacity, lock quality, verified fire ratings, anchoring, and climate protection all factor into what you're really paying for. MWGUNSAFES carries top manufacturers who've been in the business since the beginning — Liberty, Browning, Fort Knox, American Security, and Champion — and our team will help you find the safe that actually fits your needs, your home, and South Louisiana's climate.

The lock is the heart of any safe. Different mechanisms offer different tradeoffs in convenience, reliability, and security — and the right choice comes down to preference, how you plan to use the safe, and which manufacturer you're buying from. At MWGUNSAFES in Baton Rouge, we carry every major lock type on our showroom floor so South Louisiana customers can see and try each one before deciding. Here's a breakdown.
Mechanical Dial Lock
The mechanical dial is "old faithful" — it's been the standard for generations and remains a trusted option today.
- Uses a 4-digit combination (dialed in a full-rotation sequence, e.g., turn to the first number, back around to the second, and so on).
- No batteries, no electronics — purely mechanical.
- Requires precision: you have to land exactly on each number, and the numbers can drift slightly over time, making it a bit harder to open.
- Can be more difficult for some users, particularly as eyesight or dexterity changes with age.
It's a matter of preference — some people love the simplicity and reliability of a dial; others find it less convenient day-to-day.
Electronic Keypad Lock
The electronic lock has become the most popular choice among our Baton Rouge customers.
- Typically a 6-digit combination.
- You can change the combination yourself, and depending on the manufacturer, some locks support multiple user combinations.
- Runs on a 9-volt battery — S&G and SecuRam locks are built around the Duracell 9V standard. Using a different battery brand or type can damage the keypad.
- Always check the battery's expiration date before installing it — if it expires within the current year, it's already too old. Look for a battery with several years of shelf life remaining.
- Plan to swap the battery a couple of times a year, especially given South Louisiana's humidity.
Biometric Lock
Biometric locks use fingerprint recognition, often paired with a keypad as a backup entry method (varies by manufacturer). This is largely a preference-based choice for buyers who want fast, code-free access.
Redundant Lock
A redundant lock requires both an electronic and a mechanical lock to be operated together to open the safe — offering an extra layer of security for buyers who want both systems working in tandem.
Key Lock
Key locks are most commonly found on smaller, personal-use safes. They're also sometimes paired with mechanical dial locks, where the key simply locks the dial in the open position for convenience.
Time Lock
Time locks restrict access to specific time windows and are typically used in commercial settings rather than residential ones. Stop by our Airline Highway showroom and we're glad to walk you through when this type of lock makes sense for a business.
A Note on Lock Warranties
Lock problems are far less common than they used to be — most manufacturers back their locks with strong warranties for several years after purchase. Many also offer extended warranties on the lock itself.
A few important things to know:
- Extended warranties are only offered by select manufacturers, and they're purchased directly through the manufacturer — not through MWGUNSAFES — when you register your safe.
- Our team always reminds Baton Rouge customers to look into this when registering, but registration and the extended warranty are handled independently of our store.
- The cost is minimal compared to the price of a lock repair — if you ever need service, it can pay for itself several times over.
Quick Battery Reminder
If your safe has an electronic lock:
- Use a 9-volt Duracell battery for S&G and SecuRam locks.
- Make sure the battery has several years left before its expiration date — don't install one expiring this year.
- Using a non-recommended battery brand risks frying the lock.

At MWGUNSAFES in Baton Rouge, we carry every major lock type on our showroom floor so South Louisiana customers can see and try each one before deciding. Here's a breakdown.
Mechanical Dial Lock

- Make sure the battery has several years left before its expiration date — don't install one expiring this year.
- Using a non-recommended battery brand risks frying the lock.

Protect what you’ve worked hard for — with strength built to last.

Anyone can print "fireproof" on a box. What matters is whether the rating comes from independent, third-party testing — not a marketing claim on a listing from an online marketplace or a discount import you'll find outside a real Baton Rouge dealer.
Established manufacturers publish real, tested fire ratings:
