We Live Here. We Protect Here.
Not all safes are created equal — and the difference between a real safe and a glorified steel cabinet often comes down to details most buyers never think to ask about. At MWGUNSAFES, Baton Rouge's premier destination for safes and vaults, we've helped South Louisiana families and businesses choose the right safe for over 40 years. Here's what actually matters before you buy.
1. Steel Gauge & Body Construction
Steel gauge tells you how thick the safe's body is — and it's counterintuitive: the lower the gauge number, the thicker (and stronger) the steel.
| Gauge | Thickness (approx.) | Relative Strength |
|---|---|---|
| 14 ga | 0.075" | Lightest / entry-level |
| 12 ga | 0.105" | Moderate |
| 11 ga | 0.120" | Better |
| 10 ga | 0.135" | Strong |
| 7 ga | 0.180" | Heaviest / commercial-grade |
Always ask what gauge steel is used in the body, not just the door — many budget safes use a thick door plate to impress buyers while the body is thin sheet metal. Our team walks Baton Rouge customers through steel specs on every safe on our showroom floor, side by side, so you can see and feel the difference.
2. How the Safe Is Built
Construction method matters as much as thickness:
- Tack-welded vs. continuously welded seams — Fewer, stronger welds mean fewer weak points for prying or forced entry.
- Rolled/formed body vs. seamed body — A body formed from fewer pieces of steel has fewer seams, which means fewer vulnerabilities.
- Number of seams — Ask how many seams the body has. More seams generally means more potential entry points.
3. Where the Steel Comes From
Not all steel is equal. Ask whether the safe is made with U.S. steel or imported steel, and where it's manufactured. Steel quality, consistency, and sourcing directly affect how the safe performs under attack — this is a fair question to ask any dealer, and reputable brands will have a clear answer. Every brand we carry at our Baton Rouge showroom — Liberty, Browning, Fort Knox, American Security, and Champion — can answer it with confidence.
4. Size & Real-World Capacity
Advertised "gun capacity" numbers are often optimistic. A safe listed as a 30-gun safe may realistically hold 15 — or even 10 — depending on what you're storing.
Keep in mind:
- Scoped rifles, bolt-actions, and ARs/AKs with certain stock configurations can take up 2 to 4 slots each, not one.
- Rack configuration and accessories (door organizers, shelving) can increase usable capacity.
- Always think in terms of your actual collection, not the manufacturer's rated number.
Stop by our Airline Highway showroom and we'll help you map out exactly how many long guns, handguns, and valuables your safe will realistically hold.
5. Locking Mechanisms
Electronic keypad locks:
- Typically a 6-digit combination that you can change yourself.
- Run on a 9-volt battery — S&G and SecuRam locks are built around the Duracell 9V standard. Using the wrong battery can damage the keypad.
- Check the battery's expiration date before installing — if it expires within the current year, it's already too old.
- Swap the battery a couple of times a year, especially given South Louisiana's humidity.
Mechanical dial locks:
- No batteries, no electronics — a traditional, proven option.
(Want the full breakdown of every lock type we offer, including biometric and redundant locks? Check out our [Locking Mechanisms Guide].)
6. Fire Ratings — Ask for Proof
Anyone can print "fireproof" on a box. What matters is whether the rating comes from independent, third-party testing — not a marketing claim on a listing from an online marketplace or a discount import you'll find outside a real Baton Rouge dealer.
Established manufacturers publish real, tested fire ratings:
| Brand | Tested Fire Rating |
|---|---|
| Browning | 1200°F and 1550°F (tested at both) |
| Liberty | 1200°F |
| Fort Knox | 1200°F |
| American Security (AMSEC) | 1200°F |
Brands like Liberty, Browning, Fort Knox, American Security, and Champion have decades of testing and manufacturing history behind them. If a safe is priced well below these brands, ask why — the fire rating, steel gauge, and construction are usually where the cost was cut. MWGUNSAFES carries all of these trusted, American-tested brands in-store.
7. Anchoring: Should You Bolt It Down?
Where the safe lives changes the answer:
- Garage, workshop, office, or commercial space: Bolt it down. These locations are more exposed to theft attempts, and an unbolted safe can simply be tipped or carried out.
- Inside the home: Often a matter of preference, depending on the safe's weight and what's stored inside — but still worth considering for higher-value contents.
8. Intended Use
Think through how you'll actually use the safe before you buy:
- Rifles, handguns, or both?
- Do you want modular interior configurations as your collection grows?
- Is this for storage only, or do you need quick access?
9. Climate Considerations: Don't Skip the Dehumidifier
Especially here in South Louisiana, humidity is a real threat to what's inside your safe. A dehumidifier (rod or desiccant-based) helps prevent rust and pitting on firearms and valuables. This applies to both gun safes and most home safes — condensation builds up inside a sealed steel box faster than people expect in our climate.
Why Baton Rouge Trusts MWGUNSAFES
Steel gauge, construction, steel sourcing, true capacity, lock quality, verified fire ratings, anchoring, and climate protection all factor into what you're really paying for. MWGUNSAFES carries top manufacturers who've been in the business since the beginning — Liberty, Browning, Fort Knox, American Security, and Champion — and our team will help you find the safe that actually fits your needs, your home, and South Louisiana's climate.

The lock is the heart of any safe. Different mechanisms offer different tradeoffs in convenience, reliability, and security — and the right choice comes down to preference, how you plan to use the safe, and which manufacturer you're buying from. At MWGUNSAFES in Baton Rouge, we carry every major lock type on our showroom floor so South Louisiana customers can see and try each one before deciding. Here's a breakdown.
Mechanical Dial Lock
The mechanical dial is "old faithful" — it's been the standard for generations and remains a trusted option today.
- Uses a 4-digit combination (dialed in a full-rotation sequence, e.g., turn to the first number, back around to the second, and so on).
- No batteries, no electronics — purely mechanical.
- Requires precision: you have to land exactly on each number, and the numbers can drift slightly over time, making it a bit harder to open.
- Can be more difficult for some users, particularly as eyesight or dexterity changes with age.
It's a matter of preference — some people love the simplicity and reliability of a dial; others find it less convenient day-to-day.
Electronic Keypad Lock
The electronic lock has become the most popular choice among our Baton Rouge customers.
- Typically a 6-digit combination.
- You can change the combination yourself, and depending on the manufacturer, some locks support multiple user combinations.
- Runs on a 9-volt battery — S&G and SecuRam locks are built around the Duracell 9V standard. Using a different battery brand or type can damage the keypad.
- Always check the battery's expiration date before installing it — if it expires within the current year, it's already too old. Look for a battery with several years of shelf life remaining.
- Plan to swap the battery a couple of times a year, especially given South Louisiana's humidity.
Biometric Lock
Biometric locks use fingerprint recognition, often paired with a keypad as a backup entry method (varies by manufacturer). This is largely a preference-based choice for buyers who want fast, code-free access.
Redundant Lock
A redundant lock requires both an electronic and a mechanical lock to be operated together to open the safe — offering an extra layer of security for buyers who want both systems working in tandem.
Key Lock
Key locks are most commonly found on smaller, personal-use safes. They're also sometimes paired with mechanical dial locks, where the key simply locks the dial in the open position for convenience.
Time Lock
Time locks restrict access to specific time windows and are typically used in commercial settings rather than residential ones. Stop by our Airline Highway showroom and we're glad to walk you through when this type of lock makes sense for a business.
A Note on Lock Warranties
Lock problems are far less common than they used to be — most manufacturers back their locks with strong warranties for several years after purchase. Many also offer extended warranties on the lock itself.
A few important things to know:
- Extended warranties are only offered by select manufacturers, and they're purchased directly through the manufacturer — not through MWGUNSAFES — when you register your safe.
- Our team always reminds Baton Rouge customers to look into this when registering, but registration and the extended warranty are handled independently of our store.
- The cost is minimal compared to the price of a lock repair — if you ever need service, it can pay for itself several times over.
Quick Battery Reminder
If your safe has an electronic lock:
- Use a 9-volt Duracell battery for S&G and SecuRam locks.
- Make sure the battery has several years left before its expiration date — don't install one expiring this year.
- Using a non-recommended battery brand risks frying the lock.

Electronic Access, Built In
This unit comes with an electronic lock rather than the standard mechanical dial — code-based entry that's faster for everyday access while keeping the same manipulation-resistant security Fort Knox builds into all of its lock options. It's also outfitted with the Maverick upgrade bundle, giving this safe extra convenience features beyond the base configuration. Ask us in-store for the full breakdown of what's included on this specific unit.
Built to Stop Fire
Fort Knox's Inferno Shield system is what earns the Maverick 7251 its 90-minute, 1,600°F rating. It starts with Type-C Fireboard, Fort Knox's own reinforced fireboard, built to hold its shape and keep insulating even under sustained, extreme heat. Standard fireboard (Type-X, the same material used in fire-rated drywall) can shrink or crumble well before that point — Type-C is formulated specifically to outlast it. That fireboard is held in place by anchors welded directly to the safe's body rather than glued in, creating a sealed air gap between the outer steel and the fireboard that slows heat transfer the same way a double-pane window does. Glue can melt during a fire and let fireboard slump away from the walls, so Fort Knox welds it in place instead to keep that protection intact for the life of the safe — especially important in humid climates like South Louisiana. A dual door seal system closes things out: a smoke seal keeps soot and heat from seeping in, and a heat-activated fire seal expands to close the door gap the moment temperatures climb, sealing the interior before flames ever reach it.
Built to Stop Burglary
The Maverick 7251's body is 10-gauge steel, formed and welded as a single unibody rather than multiple bolted panels, which means fewer seams for a pry bar to exploit. The door is backed by 13 solid steel locking bolts, roughly 1-1/2" in diameter, securing it on multiple sides rather than just at the hinge, and set inside a reinforced door frame with a drill guard and hardened plate protecting the lock from drill attacks. The safe is UL Listed as a Residential Security Container and CA DOJ compliant.
What Makes Fort Knox Different
Fort Knox has built vaults and gun safes in Orem, Utah since the 1980s, and every safe is built to order — there's no off-the-shelf Fort Knox. Even the Maverick, Fort Knox's most affordable series, carries 10-gauge steel that rivals other brands' mid-to-upper tier safes, and it uses the same Type-C Fireboard and welded anchor construction found on Fort Knox's top-tier vaults. Moving up in series buys you size and upgrade options, not a better core fire system. Every Fort Knox safe, regardless of tier, is backed by a lifetime factory warranty and carries independently tested, published fire ratings rather than just a number printed on the box — one of the reasons MWGUNSAFES carries Fort Knox alongside only a handful of other trusted manufacturers.
Buy the Fort Knox Maverick 7251 in Baton Rouge
Whether you're comparing large-capacity Fort Knox safes in Baton Rouge, looking for a 90-minute fire-rated gun safe with electronic access, or just want the best gun safe near me for a serious collection, MWGUNSAFES has this Brilliant White Gloss Maverick 7251 ready to see in person.

Protect your firearms. Protect your family's documents and heirlooms. Protect what you've worked so hard for.

The lock is the heart of any safe.

Fort Knox Maverick 7241 Gun Safe
Pepper Dust Gloss | 90-Minute Fire Rated | 10-Gauge Steel
The Fort Knox Maverick 7241 is one of the largest safes in the Maverick series, built for collectors who need serious capacity without stepping up to Fort Knox's higher-tier vaults. If you're searching for a large-capacity Fort Knox gun safe in Baton Rouge, a 52-gun safe with electronic lock, or a fire-rated safe near me ready for a growing collection, this Pepper Dust Gloss Maverick 7241 is ready to see in person.

Built to Stop Fire
Fort Knox's Inferno Shield system is what earns the Maverick 7241 its 90-minute, 1,600°F rating.
The Maverick 7241's body is 10-gauge steel, formed and welded as a single unibody rather than multiple bolted panels, which means fewer seams for a pry bar to exploit. The door is backed by 11 solid steel locking bolts, roughly 1-1/2" in diameter, securing it on multiple sides rather than just at the hinge, and set inside a reinforced door frame with a drill guard and hardened plate protecting the lock from drill attacks.
Buy the Fort Knox Maverick 7241 in Baton Rouge
Whether you're comparing large-capacity Fort Knox safes in Baton Rouge, looking for a 90-minute fire-rated gun safe with electronic access, or just want the best gun safe near me for a serious collection, MWGUNSAFES has this Pepper Dust Gloss Maverick 7241 ready to see in person.
📍 Mike Ward's Liberty Safes / MWGUNSAFES 12485 Airline Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 📞 225-448-3234 🌐 www.mwgunsafes.com
Proudly serving Baton Rouge, Gonzales, Prairieville, Denham Springs, Zachary, and all of South Louisiana with professional in-home delivery and installation.
Protect your firearms. Protect your family's documents and heirlooms. Protect what you've worked so hard for.

Fort Knox Maverick 6637 Gun Safe
90-Minute Fire Rated | 10-Gauge Steel
The Fort Knox Maverick 6637 is the entry point into Fort Knox's lineup — and it still outperforms most other manufacturers' top-of-the-line models. Built with a 10-gauge steel unibody, a 3/8" reinforced door edge, and Fort Knox's Inferno Shield fire protection rated to 1,600°F for 90 minutes, the Maverick 6637 is built for people who've worked hard for what they own and want it protected right.
If you're searching for a Fort Knox gun safe in Baton Rouge, a 90-minute fire-rated safe near me, or a 10-gauge steel gun safe with lifetime warranty, the Maverick 6637 is built to earn that search.
Specifications
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| External Dimensions | 66.5" H x 37" W x 27" D (add 3" to depth for handle) |
| Internal Dimensions | 62" H x 33-3/8" W x 19-3/8" D |
| Interior Volume | ~36 cu. ft. |
| Weight | ~1,000 lbs. |
| Body Steel | 10-Gauge |
| Door Edge Steel | 3/8" |
| Fire Rating | 1,600°F for 90 Minutes |
| Burglary Rating | UL Listed Residential Security Container |
| Locking Bolts | 9–11, solid steel, ~1-1/2" diameter |
| Gun Capacity | Up to 48 long guns (varies by interior configuration) |
| Standard Lock | S&G Group II mechanical dial lock |
| Warranty | Fort Knox Lifetime Factory Warranty |
| Made In | Orem, Utah, USA |
Built to Stop Fire
Fort Knox's Inferno Shield system is what earns the Maverick 6637 its 90-minute, 1,600°F rating. Three things make it work:
- Type-C Fireboard — Fort Knox's own reinforced fireboard, built to hold its shape and keep insulating even under sustained, extreme heat. Standard fireboard (Type-X, the same material used in fire-rated drywall) can shrink or crumble well before that point — Type-C is formulated specifically to outlast it.
- Welded Anchors, Not Glue — The fireboard is held in place by anchors that are welded to the safe's body, creating a sealed air gap between the outer steel and the fireboard. That gap slows heat transfer the same way a double-pane window does. Just as important: welded anchors don't loosen or sag over time the way glued-in liners can, especially in humid climates like South Louisiana.
- Dual Door Seal — A smoke seal keeps soot and heat out, and a heat-activated fire seal expands to close the door gap the moment temperatures climb — sealing the interior before flames ever reach it.
Built to Stop Burglary
- 10-gauge, unibody steel construction — the body is formed from a single welded sheet of steel rather than multiple bolted panels, so there are fewer seams for a pry bar to exploit.
- 9–11 solid steel locking bolts, roughly 1-1/2" in diameter, securing the door on multiple sides — not just at the hinge.
- Reinforced door frame with a drill guard and hardened plate protecting the lock from drill attacks.
- UL Listed as a Residential Security Container, and CA DOJ compliant.
What Makes Fort Knox Different
Fort Knox has built vaults and gun safes in Orem, Utah since the 1980s, and every safe is built to order — there's no off-the-shelf Fort Knox. A few things that set the brand apart:
- Thickest steel in its class, at every price point. Even the Maverick — Fort Knox's most affordable series — carries 10-gauge steel that rivals other brands' mid-to-upper tier safes.
- The same fire protection across the whole lineup. From the Maverick up through Fort Knox's top-tier vaults, every safe uses the same Type-C Fireboard and welded anchor construction. Moving up in series buys you size and upgrade options — not a better core fire system.
- Lifetime factory warranty on every safe, every tier.
- Independently tested, published fire ratings — not just a number printed on the box. It's one of the reasons MWGUNSAFES carries Fort Knox alongside only a handful of other trusted manufacturers.
Buy the Fort Knox Maverick 6637 in Baton Rouge
Whether you're comparing Fort Knox safes in Baton Rouge, looking for a 90-minute fire-rated gun safe, or just want the best gun safe near me for a growing collection, MWGUNSAFES can show you the Maverick 6637 in person, walk you through lock and finish options, and handle delivery and setup.

Fort Knox Maverick 6026 Gun Safe
Jewelry & Watch Home Safe | Sky Blue Gloss | 90-Minute Fire Rated
This Fort Knox Maverick 6026 is built out as a dedicated home safe for jewelry, watches, and everyday valuables — not firearms. It's outfitted with a full jewelry cabinet and three built-in watch winders, backed by the same 10-gauge steel body, 3/8" reinforced door, and Fort Knox Inferno Shield fire protection rated to 1,600°F for 90 minutes that Fort Knox puts behind every Maverick.
If you're searching for a jewelry safe in Baton Rouge, a home safe with built-in watch winders, or a fire-rated safe for heirlooms and valuables, this Sky Blue Gloss unit is ready to see in person.

Built for Jewelry, Watches & Everyday Valuables
This unit's interior is set up specifically for jewelry and watch storage, not as a gun safe. It includes a full jewelry cabinet for rings, necklaces, and other pieces, plus three watch winders to keep automatic watches wound and ready to wear. It's a fit for anyone looking to protect a jewelry collection, watch collection, important documents, or family heirlooms in one dedicated, fire-rated safe rather than repurposing a gun safe interior.
An electronic lock is available on this unit for fast, code-based access — a popular option for a safe that gets opened daily, rather than a mechanical dial that's better suited to less frequent access.
Built to Stop Fire
Fort Knox's Inferno Shield system is what earns the Maverick 6026 its 90-minute, 1,600°F rating. Glue can melt during a fire and let fireboard slump away from the walls, so Fort Knox welds it in place instead to keep that protection intact for the life of the safe — especially important in humid climates like South Louisiana, and especially valuable when what's inside is jewelry, watches, and documents rather than something replaceable. A dual door seal system closes things out: a smoke seal keeps soot and heat from seeping in, and a heat-activated fire seal expands to close the door gap the moment temperatures climb, sealing the interior before flames ever reach it.
Built to Stop Burglary
The Maverick 6026's body is 10-gauge steel, formed and welded as a single unibody rather than multiple bolted panels, which means fewer seams for a pry bar to exploit. The door is backed by 9 solid steel locking bolts, roughly 1-1/2" in diameter, securing it on multiple sides rather than just at the hinge, and set inside a reinforced door frame with a drill guard and hardened plate protecting the lock from drill attacks.

Protect your jewelry. Protect your watches. Protect what you've worked so hard for.

If you’re searching for a 33-gun fire-rated safe in Baton Rouge, the Browning Armored 33 delivers American-made strength, advanced fire protection, and dependable security built for real-world protection.
